Bookkeeping in holding companies
Even if your holding company only has a few transactions per year, the new requirements of the Bookkeeping Act also apply to you.
From 2024/25, all companies - including holding companies without VAT liability - must use a digital accounting system and record entries on an ongoing basis.
All companies are covered - including holding companies
With the new Bookkeeping Act, all limited liability companies must use an approved digital bookkeeping system. There are no exceptions for holding companies or companies with low activity. If your company has calendar year accounting, you must be ready by January 1, 2025. If your financial year starts on July 1, for example, the requirement already applies now.
One annual accounting is not enough
In the past, it was common to do the bookkeeping for a holding company once a year. But this is no longer sufficient in most cases. The law requires you to do your bookkeeping continuously and store documents digitally. In practice, this means monthly if you have even a small amount of activity.
Excel is not enough
A digital accounting system must be registered with the Danish Business Authority. An Excel sheet or an older accounting program does not meet the requirements. Among other things, the system must be able to store documents digitally, backup and be disclosed in the annual report.
Fines for non-compliance
It is the company's management that is liable for correct bookkeeping. Violating the rules can result in fines, typically from DKK 10,000 and up. That's why it's important to get a handle on the requirements in good time.
